Places to visit near Christchurch

Just because you reserve your accommodation at one of the many Christchurch hotels does not mean that you have to stay within the city limits.  There’s plenty to see and do outside Christchurch.  For instance, you can take a scenic trip on the TranzAlpine Train to Greymouth.  The trip takes about 4 – 5 hours so this gives you more than enough time to get there, back and enjoy a few hours in the town itself.

Just over 2 hours north of Christchurch is the lovely town of Kaikoura.  Whale and dolphin watches are popular activities as well as scuba diving, horse trekking, 4WD adventures and even wine tasting.

If you have extra time to spend on the south island, a trip to Queenstown is a definite must!  The drive along the coast is wonderfully refreshing and often the route of choice.  The drive takes approximately 5 – 6 hours so you may want to consider leaving early enough to make it there and back with time to spare.  Your Christchurch apartment accommodation, hotel or motel room will be a much welcomed sight upon your return!

If you aren’t up for driving long distances, attractions such as the Arthur’s Pass National Park and the Cave Stream Scenic Reserve are less than 2 hours away and have amazing scenic treats to offer.  By leaving early in the morning, you can easily spend half a day in one of these locations or a few hours in both places before returning to your Christchurch hotel accommodation.
