Pakiri Beach Horse Riding, New Zealand
Overnight and multi day horse trekking at Pakiri Beach in Northland, New Zealand. Horse riding options available for everyone from the beginner to seasoned horse rider. There is a great choice of horse riding holidays from rides on Pakiri Beach, to following the trails and tracks of the surrounding farming and hill country.
We are just 90 minutes from downtown Auckland city, less than 2 hours from Auckland International Airport and just minutes from Matakana Coast Wine Country.
Our tribe, Ngati Wai, were seafarers. They discovered this place after following the call of the whales across the Pacific. Our home is on land that has been handed down through many generations. Here we have gained a lifetime of experience with horses and farming. We would love to share the history and the legends of this special place with you.
Our family farm is known as Taurere; over north eastern coastal hill country in lower Northland. A true working farm, Taurere carries 200 beef and breeding cattle, 200 Perendale sheep and 127 horses, 27 of which comprise the well-established Taurere Park Arabians horse stud.
It is our privilege to be caretakers to the unpopulated, pristine and private Pakiri Beach, 15 km white sand surf beach touching the majestic Pacific Ocean. We love sharing the splendid isolation and beauty of this place with our guests. Here you will see the rare and endangered NZ dotterels and fairy terns as well as other birds such as the blue heron, the variable oyster catcher and many others.
All our horses are chosen for their kind temperaments and their unflappable attitudes. They are forward going and relaxed and we keep them kind by rotating their work schedules and treating them well. Those used on the long multi day rides are chosen for their courage, fitness and dependability in all and unexpected situations.
We have 60 horses who are currently working as trekking horses, plus some of the Arabian stud horses are ridden by our guides and by experienced riders doing the multi day treks.
These horses live in a herd and have their own hierarchy and politics which we all respect. They live out all year in grassy paddocks. The only horses stabled here are stabled at night only and they are our two Arabian stallions and the young stock we are weaning or showing. The trekkers consist of mainly crossbred station horses which we source from either the Far North or the East Coast.
Please Note: These trips are now booked out from 23 December 2013 to 15 January 2014
