Marlborough, New Zealand

The Marlborough region of New Zealand is in the north eastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand. Along with the Nelson region, Marlborough is blessed with New Zealand's highest amount of sunshine each year. Marlborough region of New Zealand extends from Kaikoura on the east coast, to the Marlborough Sounds, and includes the main  towns of Blenheim and Picton.

Centred on Blenheim is New Zealand's largest wine growing region of Marlborough, New Zealand. With over 4,000 hectares of grapes planted and almost 300 grape growers. Though the region is best known for Sauvignon Blanc, it is also justly proud of the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Riesling and Pinot Gris produced here. In recent years Marlborough has also become recognized as a region that produces great method traditionelle wines.  Along with the wineries, Marlborough has a reputation for gourmet foods and seafood. As a result the region has some of New Zealand's best small cafes and restaurants, where you can sample the local produce.

There are a large number of activities centred on Picton and the Marlborough Sounds. You can take cruises out to view the wildlife or Swim with the Dolphins. Water taxis will take you out into the sounds for day walks, or longer multi day treks, such as Queen Charlotte Track; either guided or self-guided. You can hire a sea kayak, or take a guided kayaking day or multi-day tour out into the Marlborough Sounds. The Marlborough Sounds also has some great deep sea fishing trips, where you can catch Blue Cod, Snapper or Groper and many other species.

Further south at Kaikoura the area is famous for whale watching trips, as well as eco trips to see the myriad of sea birds. You can also see or go swimming with the Dolphins, or for something different try swimming with the seals, these most inquisitive of creatures.

Climate in Marlborough, New Zealand

Due to Marlborough being sheltered by mountains to west, south and east, along with Nelson region, the Wine Growing region is New Zealand's sunniest area.

In summer the weather is warm and dry, with little rain. Winters are mild, with only an occasional frost. Summer temperatures are normally around 20-26C, and in winter 10-15C. Sunshine averages over 2,400 hours each year, and total rainfall averages 1,249 mm each year.
