Te Anau, New Zealand

The small town of Te Anau New Zealand is located on Lake Te Anau, the largest lake in New Zealand's South Island. Te Anau is centrally located, an easy drive from Queenstown, Dunedin or Invercargill and Stewart Island.

Across Lake Te Anau is the magnificent back drop of the mountains of Fiordland National Park, dominated by Mount Luxmore and the Murchison Mountains. Fiordland National Park is popular for hiking, sea kayaking and fishing. The elusive rainbow and brown trout are plentiful in the many lakes, streams and rivers.Te Anau is the main accommodation centre from which you can explore Fiordland National Park. There is quite a range of accommodation available from hotels and motels, to boutique B&B's and holiday parks. However if you want to stay here in the high season from November to April, you should always book well ahead, as accommodation in Te Anau often books out. In the town there are many small cafes and restaurants, as well as 7 day a week shopping.

From Te Anau there are full day tours to Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound. Often called "the walking capital of the world", Te Anau is also the starting point for some of the New Zealand Great Walks. Whilst in Te Anau don't forget to explore Te Ana-au Glowworm Caves, which is a 35 minute launch cruise across Lake Te Anau.
There are many scenic flights available into Fiordland National Park; as well as a small museum with the Maori and European history of the region; and a wildlife park with many rare and endangered birds native to Fiordland, including the Takahe. If that is not enough you can also try horse back riding, jetboating or 4WD bike rides.
