Hanmer Springs, New Zealand

Hanmer Springs is located in the Canterbury Region of New Zealand's South Island.  As the name suggests, the town was built around the local hot spring which was discovered in the late 19th century.  It's safe to say that these gorgeous hot waters are the main attraction of the area and are one of the biggest reasons for the thriving local tourism industry.

Hanmer Springs Thermal Hot Pools

The hot springs and thermal pools should be at the top of anyone's list when visiting this lovely part of New Zealand.  Take advantage of one of the finest forms of relaxation that nature has to offer by giving your muscles a good soak!  Let the warm waters wash all that stress away as you enjoy a well-deserved break. Relax in the hot springs, be pampered with a facial or the ultimate body or hands and feet massage.

Hanmer Springs outdoor activities

A walk through Hanmer Forest should also feature on everyone's agenda.  Take your time exploring the green pathways and, if you are up for a little challenge, make your way to the local waterfall too.

A walk up Conical Hill will require some effort but, on the plus side, the walk is relatively short and the view from the top is simply out of this world!  Make sure you take refreshments along for the trip and your camera with plenty of battery power and storage space.  You are definitely going to want to snap away when you reach the top!

If all the hiking and walking gets too much for you, you can also look into horse treks and let your four-legged friend do at least most of the work.

Should you really want to get your heart racing, then you could try a bungy jump from Hanmer Bridge; and perhaps combine with a thrilling jet boat ride or white water rafting trip.

Other local fun and sights

Another lovely family activity is the popular A-Maze-N-Golf.  This really is a remarkable maze, and who wouldn't fancy a friendly game of mini golf?  This is great for the kids but adults seem to have just as much, if not more, fun too!

If you plan your visit during the winter months, you will be pleased to know that there are some fantastic ski facilities in the area so make sure you pack your luggage accordingly!

With activities for both winter and summer months alike, it's easy to see why Hanmer Springs isn't just a town that tourists pass through.  It is, in fact, the main destination for many locals and international tourists. We recommend staying at least one or two nights in Hanmer Springs. There is a great choice of Hanmer Springs accommodation.
