Picton, New Zealand

The town of Picton is located on the northern coast of the South Island.  The most important feature of this town is the fact that it is the destination for the interislander ferry from Wellington.  This not only makes it important for the locals and business but it's a benefit to the town with regards to tourism as well.

Marlborough Sounds and the Queen Charlotte Track

If you enjoy the outdoors, the ocean and a bit of boating, then you will love exploring the fantastic Marlborough Sounds!  The main sounds within this group include Picton Sound and Queen Charlotte Sound.  A number of which offer addition activities like scenic drives and hikes.

Picton Marina

The Queen Charlotte Track is of the most popular walking trails and never fails to leave visitors feeling satisfied.  The views are superb, the air is crisp and it's an all-round fantastic way to spend some time outside.  No matter what time of year you go, this is a great trail to enjoy.  According to previous visitors, it is especially lovely around November.

The Lochmara Lodge Marlborough Sounds Wildlife Recovery Centre on the Queen Charlotte Track is a wonderful spot for any nature lover or curious observer to enjoy.  This unique facility focuses on conserving the local fauna and flora through various breeding and other programmes.  If you are an art fan, make sure that you visit the Lochmara Lodge Arts Centre.  This centre has both indoor displays and sculptures outdoors.

Thing to do in Picton

If you are enjoying some particularly fine weather, you will want to make the most of it by spending as much of your holiday outdoors as possible.  While there are a number of outdoor sights and activities, as mentioned above, there are also plenty of educational activities that also take place outside so you can get the best of both worlds!

Lunch in Picton

Another wonderful place for the whole family to learn and enjoy a close up look at the oldest wooden ship that brought the original immigrants to New Zealand, is at the Edwin Fox Ship and Visitor Centre.

If you enjoy diving, there are also local facilities that are more than happy to assist you with equipment and take you out for a fantastic underwater adventure!

Should the weather not play its part, for some reason, it's always a good idea to have a backup plan to keep everyone entertained indoors.  The Edwin Fox Maritime Museum and the Picton Museum are ideal for both educational and entertainment purposes.

If you are planning a New Zealand holiday, the town of Picton should certainly be somewhere at the top of your list.  Even if you do not spend your entire holiday here, a few days will give you enough time to squeeze in as many activities as possible before moving on to your next destination.
