St Arnaud, New Zealand

The small alpine village of St Arnaud is located in the north of New Zealand's South Island.  Being a small village, its size and facilities ideally cater for a relatively small number of locals and tourist who make their way here to enjoy the outdoors at its best.

Things to do in St Arnaud

The area is ideal for a number of outdoor activities.  With the nearby Lake Rotoiti, visitors can enjoy scenic bush trails and fishing.  Lake Rotoroa is also fairly close by and is open for fishing should you wish to venture out a bit further.

If you enjoy water activities but aren't much of a fisherman, the lakes are also the perfect kayaking spots.  A trip out on the water will also give you the chance to enjoy a superb view of your surroundings and complete, relaxing silence.

Just remember to be very aware of your surroundings at all times and keep your eyes open for any and all animal life.  Stick to designated pathways and avoid destroying any natural plant life.

Nelson Lakes National Park

The Nelson Lakes National Park is probably the main attraction in the entire area.  It was formed back in 1956 and surrounds two major lakes, a number of valleys and picturesque mountains.  The Department of Conservation administrate the park and they also run the Visitors Centre in St Arnaud.  If you are planning to visit the park, make your way to the Visitors Centre first for some up to date information.

Both of the lakes have camp ground facilities so you can enjoy a break, a snack and prepare yourself for the rest of your adventurous journey.  There are a number of designated trails and visitors can choose to walk or explore the area by mountain bike.

For anyone looking to escape the busy city life, St Arnaud is the place to do just that!  Enjoy the fresh air, the friendly community and small town life that awaits.  For families, this is the ideal way to get the kids away from the TV, computer and other non-physical activities.  Get active and enjoy the outdoors together with regular trips and walks in this beautiful region.
