Can you see both islands in ten days?

In Self-Drive, Planning your trip

Yes, and we have ten-day two-island itineraries. They work best as one-way highlights routes, which avoid retracing the journey. The trade-off is fewer nights in each place and more frequent packing. For a more relaxed ten-day holiday, one island usually gives you more time to explore.

Frequently asked questions

Auckland is the main international gateway for North Island itineraries. Christchurch and Queenstown both take direct services from Australia and are the usual starting points for the South Island, with Queenstown closest to Fiordland and the Southern Lakes. On a one-way two-island route, flying into one end and out of the other avoids retracing the journey in either direction.

Yes, the tour can be split:

Northern Portion (first 5 days)

Southern Slice (last 10 days)

What Can You See on a North Island Self-Drive Holiday?

North Island itineraries combine Māori culture, geothermal landscapes, film locations, forests, beaches and wine regions. Popular routes feature Waitomo, Hobbiton, Rotorua, Taupō, Tongariro National Park, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington.

What Can You See on a South Island Self-Drive Holiday?

South Island journeys showcase alpine lakes, glaciers, national parks, wildlife-rich coastlines and dramatic mountain roads. Depending on the route, you may visit Aoraki/Mt Cook, Queenstown, Fiordland, the West Coast, Abel Tasman, Kaikōura, Dunedin and Stewart Island.

How Much Time Is Needed to Visit Both Islands?

Allow at least 10 to 14 days for a focused two-island itinerary, although 18 to 21 days provides a more comfortable pace. Interisland travel may include the Wellington–Picton ferry, and some itineraries also use scenic rail journeys or domestic flights.

There is no fixed North versus South price gap. In the comparable seven-day self-drive packages above, the current lead-in prices are within about AU$50 of each other. Across the wider range, travel dates, accommodation standard, how you travel and included experiences can make a larger difference than the island itself. Peak-period pricing should be confirmed when the trip is quoted.

Prices shown are per person, lead-in rates, and are subject to change with travel dates, accommodation and vehicle availability.
