How should I train for the Great Taste Trail?

In Cycle Journeys Great Taste Trail, Cycle Journeys

Ride regularly before your trip, especially on gravel or off-road surfaces. There are a few hills, so some hill training helps. If hiring an e-bike, test one beforehand.

Frequently asked questions

The trail is divided into 4–5 sections, each 35–63km. It’s built for exploration, not speed—plan extra time to enjoy stops and local produce.

Expect average speeds of 10–15km/h depending on fitness.

Expect variable conditions year-round.

  • Spring/Summer: 12–25°C
  • Winter: 3–12°C

While it’s one of NZ’s sunniest regions, weather can still shift quickly—pack layers.

Flying is the most direct option. If driving:

  • From the North Island, take the Cook Strait ferry.
  • From Christchurch, expect about a 6-hour drive.

The trail is a loop, but we recommend riding clockwise for a more scenic descent into Baton Valley. Our Nelson depot(on St Vincent Street) is right on the trail, with changing rooms and secure parking ($10/day).

NZ weather is unpredictable—pack for all conditions. If the trail becomes unsafe, we may offer shuttle support (additional fees apply).

In emergencies, call 111. For other assistance, contact your depot team (details provided at check-in).

E-bikes are in high demand—especially in peak season. Book early (up to 6 months in advance if possible). Note: e-bike bookings are non-refundable once confirmed.

Water refill points are limited. Start each day with at least 1.5–2L, carried in bottles or a hydration pack.

Most of the trail has reception, but expect blackspots in remote areas. International visitors should consider a local NZ SIM to avoid roaming costs.

Yes. Trails are well-marked. We’ll give you a map, and we recommend downloading the Great Rides App for extra support.

Your bag must weigh 15kg max. We’ll label and log your luggage and deliver it daily—usually ahead of your arrival. Extra bags or heavier gear may incur additional charges.

Build fitness by riding regularly on mixed terrain and hills. If hiring an e-bike, try one before the trip to get used to the assist. A few 1–3 hour rides each week leading up to your journey will help.

We recommend someone in your group knows how to fix a flat. If your hire bike becomes unrideable, we’ll get a replacement to you. Damage or misuse may incur repair costs.

Bringing your own bike? Make sure it’s serviced and pack spares specific to your setup.

All hire bikes come with a helmet, lock, rear carrier bag, bottle cage, tools, and spares. Bring your own water bottle.

You’re welcome to use your own seat or pedals—our team can fit them at the depot. Just remember to remove them before returning the bike.
