What should I expect on a self-guided trip?

In Trail Journeys

Self-guided tours offer more flexibility and independence. You’ll need basic bike maintenance skills (like fixing a flat), a good sense of direction, and adaptability. The trails are well signposted, and we provide clear maps and booked accommodation. Most logistics are sorted before your arrival, but our team is always on hand if anything goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

We work with a variety of trusted accommodation providers along the trails—everything from family-run motels and farmstays to heritage lodges and boutique hotels. You’ll find accommodation descriptions on each trip page.

Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own bike, pedals, seat, or other components. Just let us know in advance so we can make the right arrangements.

Every itinerary is customised. You can build a trip that fits your needs, whether guided or self-guided. Inclusions vary, so check the trip notes for full details, services, and optional extras.

A guided trip includes an experienced guide with you throughout, a small group (max. 10), and all the essentials: accommodation, most meals, maps, side trips, support vehicle access, and pre-trip info. If you need a break, you can join the support vehicle at designated points. Check the inclusions and download the Essential Information for each itinerary.

Yes. New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, so we recommend packing waterproof outerwear and warm, quick-drying layers made of wool, polyester, or nylon. Avoid cotton, which holds moisture and dries slowly. A full gear list is included in your pre-departure pack.

Our trips are active holidays, suitable for anyone in reasonably good health and fitness. Each trip is graded to help you choose the right level of challenge. We recommend reviewing our grading system and speaking with our team to ensure the trip matches your ability.
