Invercargill, New Zealand

Invercargill is both the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand.  It is also one of the southernmost cities in the world which really adds to its appeal as a tourist destination.  Nearby, you will notice large farming areas as well as bordering conservation areas such as the Fiordland National Park.  The area is mostly visited for the local natural attractions but there are a number of other activities and educational sites to enjoy as well.

To get to Invercargill by car or motorhome rental, avoid the direct route on the main highway and take the Southern Scenic Route, which runs between Dunedin and Te Anau. The scenery on this route is nothing short of spectacular. Take your time as there are lots of places to stop on the way.

Invercargill outdoor attractions

Many people visiting Invercargill make the most of their trip by planning a flight over the Stewart Island.  While many people only refer to New Zealand as consisting of 2 main islands, this smaller piece of land has approximately 400 permanent residents and is the largest island, after the North and South islands of course.  The area is also home to amazing fauna and flora which makes it the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors.

A popular lookout point is Bluff Hill.  Make sure that you take plenty of refreshments for the trip and have your camera handy for some of the most fantastic photo opportunities.

There are also a number of parks and gardens in the area. Top choices include Queens Park, the Lignite Pit Scenic Stop, Otakaro Park and Otepuni Gardens.  All of which make for a great day out and the perfect places to stretch your legs, enjoy some fresh air and lush green surroundings.
