Waitomo and Rotorua Experience from Auckland to Rotorua

Waitomo Caves Day ToursOn the Waitomo and Rotorua Experience from Auckland to Rotorua whole day sightseeing tour, embark on an unforgettable adventure through New Zealand’s North Island – experience Te Puia’s Maori legacy, Rotorua’s geothermal wonders, and Waitomo’s magical glowworm caves.

The journey starts in Auckland where we leave in the morning for the small town of Waitomo. Along the way, travel through the lush farmlands of the Waikato and King Country Regions while learning their history from your knowledgeable driver guide. You will pass through historical sites like Rangiriri where a major battle in the 1863 Maori Land Wars took place.

At Waitomo, explore the world-renowned Waitomo Caves in a 45-minute guided tour. Discovered in 1887, these underground limestone caverns house stalagmites, stalactites and other fascinating rock formations that formed over a period of 30 million years. The tour ends with a short but mesmerizing boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto where thousands of little glowworms illuminate the subterranean cavern in a magical display of bioluminescence.

Picnic-style lunch (a variety of dietary options, including vegetarian, is available) is served as we leave Waitomo and journey to Rotorua in the heart of Central North Island. We visit the organic working farm of Agrodome on the outskirts of the city so you can watch a live sheep dog trial, see how sheep are shorn, and learn everything about farming in New Zealand while riding an all-terrain vehicle.

Next on the itinerary is Te Puia, home of the “Kaitiaki,” guardians of Maori culture and heritage. Enjoy a traditional welcome at Te Puia’s marae or meeting house, and watch a Maori cultural performance to gain better understanding of their history and fascinating culture. Be thoroughly entertained by talented performers who tell Maori’s ancient and modern stories through song and dance, as well as poi and stick games.

We continue on to the marvel of Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley where you can get up close to explosive geysers and boiling mudpools on a guided tour. The star of this geothermal wonderland is the phenomenal Pohutu geyser – see it unleash vapour jets of up to 30 metres (100 ft.) high. Te Puia prides itself as the centre of Maori heritage, and you can see why on a visit to its weaving and woodcarving schools where apprentices are trained in these traditional skills.

Finally, we arrive at Rotorua where an array of adrenaline-filled and relaxing activities await. There are luging and jet-boating for the adventurous, and nature encounters and soothing spa treatments for the laid-back. You can choose to be dropped off to your hotel afterwards.
