Glacier Hikes and Flights

Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier are popular for trips to the glaciers. Fox Glacier has a comprehensive collection of guided walks and ice adventures to explore the middle and upper glacier levels. Our most popular trip is a half day Heli-hike to the ice caves of the middle glacier, where you walk on the glacier equipped with boots, crampons and walking poles. Alternatively, for fitter people you can take a full day ice climbing expedition to the upper ice falls, where under expert tuition you learn the art of using ice axes and crampons to climb the steepest ice walls and pinnacles.

For those with less time you can take a late afternoon interpretive Terminal Face Guided Walk through the bush to the terminal river at the foot of Fox Glacier. Alternatively, there is a great choice of scenic helicopter flights to both Franz Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier, which include a snow landing. You can fly to one glacier, both glaciers, or do a longer flight to include views of Mt Cook.
