Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary Nature Cruises

Just a short drive from Franz Josef Glacier, Lake Mapourika was formed about 14,000 years ago as the glacier receded inland. The lake is fringed with ancient Jurassic rainforest, with spectacular views of the Southern Alps and glaciers. Come on these scenic small boat nature cruises on Lake Mapourika, home to many native New Zealand birds, fish and eels. You may see Tui, Bellbirds, White Faced Heron, White Heron, King Fishers, Oyster Catchers and even the rare Rowi, New Zealand’s most endangered Kiwi bird, plus many more. Take a magical rainforest walk on a custom-built trail through Okarito Kiwi Sanctuary through the ancient Kahikatea rainforest as your guide points out the local fauna and flora, whilst explain the conservation of the Kiwi.

There is also an option to go fishing for Quinnat salmon and Brown Trout, depending on the season.
