Overview

A blowout of biking adventure packed into one weekend from Nelson, this 2 Day Big Weekend Mountain Bike Ride trip in New Zealand will leave you exhausted, exhilarated and with a huge smile on your face. There is option to customize for easy or intermediate riders, with or without Helibike – the choice is yours!

If you are pushed for time, a couple of days can be tailored so you see the most even in just a short window of time. Over the weekend, you’ll experience an unbelievable range of riding and variety of scenery – enduro tracks, cross-country trails, easy flowing pine routes, open alpine ridge-lines, and deep lush native forest are all here in Mountain Bike Paradise. You will be exhausted, exhilarated, stoked and blissed out after we share with you a couple of our best trips over two days.

Intended for intermediate+ riders but easily customizable for riders of a lower skill level, this trip can be rearranged so we return down the Dun Mountain Railway on Day 1 and swap the Rameka track for an easier trail in the afternoon of Day 2. Like all of our other trips, we tailor the trail according to your interests by talking to you first and getting a feel of what you are looking for so we provide the kind of experience that suits you best.

Top off this great weekend by ramping it up and switching Day 1 to a Coppermine Helibike!

Day 1Nelson - Dun Mountain Trail - Coppermine Saddle - Nelson

We meet you at your accommodation and we ride through central Nelson to the head of the Dun Mountain Trail where we spend the morning on a gentle climb up the old horse-drawn railway through exotic pine forests and deep green native beech forest.

Enroute to the Coppermine Saddle at 890m above sea level, we make regular stops to learn the history of the area and take in the views. You will get to see the landscape change during the climb from native bush to the open alpine environment of the aptly named Windy Point, until we reach the saddle for more spectacular views and lunch (provided).

If you are up for it, we can take our lunch and climb on foot to the summit of Dun Mountain for sweeping views out over the Mount Richmond Forest Park.

After lunch, we head back down to the native forests at the bottom and out into the Maitain Valley via the exciting South Branch track. There are many swimming holes along the way and if you are keen for a swim, we can stop in one before we follow the river back down to town for a “debrief” in one of the local watering holes.

We drop you back to your accommodation for some rest and shower.

If you still have energy to spare, we will show you around the town and bring you to one of the many buzzing restaurants or bars for a hearty dinner. You may also choose to spend the evening on your own.

Day 2Nelson - Canaan Loop - Rameka Track - Nelson

We meet you again at your accommodation with our transport, and we go for a drive around the Tasman Bay to Motueka where we stop for coffee before we saddle up to Takaka Hill for Canaan Downs where scenes of the Lord of the Rings were filmed – you will see hints of Mirkwood and the open Hobbit grasslands.

We ride around the Canaan Loop all morning, crossing creek, doing log rides, and taking in the views before riding back to the car park for our waiting lunch (provided) through some fun and interesting tracks.

We saddle up for the Rameka 6-Pack of tracks after lunch. The track, each with its own character and considered one of Nelson’s classics, starts off at the Rameka Track itself and runs mostly downhill for over 900m through unspoilt native forest. Initially technical, then fast and open, the track bursts out to sweeping views over Golden Bay.

Finally, it’s a fantastic ride through pine forest trails before reaching the Takaka valley below, where we cap it off on Klick 2 and Klick 1, two little fun tracks that will keep you on your toes!

We take a rest and continue on to Takaka where we stop at a local wholefoods café before driving back home.  Depending on how you feel and the remaining time, we have some extra surprise on the way.
