Overview

Embark on an overnight Forgotten World Exhibition in New Zealand that you will never forget! Enjoy a day on the rails and another day on the Whanganui River aboard Southern Hemisphere’s longest commercial jet boat tour. Spend two full days on this Expedition with one night accommodation.

Enjoy the ride to the Republic of Whangamomona on our well-loved 20 Tunnel Railcart tour down the Forgotten World Railway. Fully immerse yourself in the true stories and tall tales that are a part of this landscape as you take the 80kms journey. Spend the night at the iconic Whangamomona Hotel once you’re in the Republic.

Fly over the Whanganui National Park on an incredible helicopter flight marking the start of your second day. Gaze down at the Bridge to Somewhere and the Bridge to Nowhere as you are aloft then land above the Bridge to Nowhere at Bennett’s Clearing. Explore the Whanganui National Park on a 1 ½ hour scenic walk, getting to the Bridge of Nowhere and further down to the Mangaparua Landing.

Step into Southern Hemisphere’s longest commercial jet boat tour for an exhilarating ride up the renowned Whanganui River, exploring sites and scenes steeped in history including the intriguing “Bridge to Nowhere”. Along the way, stop for morning and afternoon tea as well as lunch before returning to Taumarunui.

Spend the second day aboard a helicopter and jet boat, if the weather permits. Partial refunds will be issued in the event of unfavourable weather condition. Alternatively, you will be picked up from Whangamomona where you take the Forgotten World Highway on your way to Taumarunui. You’ll be able to visit the resting place of Joshua Morgan, a respected early surveyor who passed away in 1892 at an early age of 35. His grave stands as a memorial to the hard work of early pioneer surveyors and is accessible via a short walkway through the bush. From the memorial, continue to Lauren’s Lavender Farm for a well-deserved break and fantastic view over the magnificent Whanganui River. Browse their shop for wonderfully made local produce before returning to Taumarunui.

What to bring:

  • In this region the weather is changeable and it’s best to prepare for all conditions no matter the season
  • Clothing that can be layered, including warm thermal/merino clothing with a good wind/rain jacket or shell is ideal
  • It can be very cool in the tunnels even in summer

We suggest you have the following:

  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • Water and extra snacks if required - we provide lunch and morning and afternoon tea snacks
  • Windproof jacket with hood even in fine weather
  • Hat, scarf and gloves
  • Sturdy footwear with warm socks
  • Pack a rainproof coat and over-trousers
  • Any personal medication as required
  • Change of clothes for the evening
  • Often we now have local artisans offering a variety of local produce for sale at some of our stops.  You may like to bring along a little cash in case something appeals.

Please note: Any participants on this tour must be capable of walking a total of 6km on a formed (but sometimes wet and muddy) track. This is roughly 1.5 hours of walking.
