Day 1: Milford Sound Day Tour from Queenstown

Set off for an exhilarating journey to Milford Sound and experience the magnificent fjord in all its grandeur with a cruise on its crystal-clear waters. Your adventure kicks off from Queenstown, and passes the serene Te Anau, onwards to the wide open space of Eglinton Valley. Drive through the Homer Tunnel, a 1.2-km. underpass carved out of solid rock. You will also get a chance to stand atop The Chasm from a footbridge connecting the roaring waterfalls and rapids.

Upon arrival at Milford Sound, embark on a journey that will bring you through the length of the fiord on a 1 ¾ hour Southern Discoveries scenic cruise. Feast your eyes on the stunning landscape the area is known for – lush native vegetation, glacier-scarred rock walls, and powerful waterfalls that tumble through valleys before crashing into the sea far below. Keep your camera handy for the iconic profile of Mitre Peak rising out of the fjord to an impressive height of 1,692 metres above sea level. After the cruise, drive back to Queenstown by coach, or alternatively, take a panoramic flight (optional extra) for that truly once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Day 2: Mount Cook Day Tour: Queenstown Return

On the second day, set out for a day trip from Queenstown to the home of “cloud piercer” Aoraki, New Zealand’s highest mountain, at Mount Cook National Park. Driving north, take in the sweeping views of the historic gold mining region of the rugged River Gorge. Drive through Cromwell, cross the Lindis Pass, and arrive at Omarama in time for your morning tea (own expense).

Enjoy the windswept high country landscape of the Mackenzie Basin as you continue on your way to Mount Cook Village where you can stand before the towering 3,754m high Aoraki/Mount Cook, which figures prominently in Maori mythology. Immerse yourself in the surrounding scenery as you tuck into a hearty lunch (optional extra) at the historic Hermitage Hotel. Weather-permitting and for an extra cost, you have the opportunity to take off on a breathtaking flight over snowcapped peaks and ancient glaciers. (Talk to your driver/guide for arrangements.) Following our satisfying lunch stop, we leave Mount Cook Village and drive back to Queenstown for an early evening arrival.
