Overview

On the 3 Day Deluxe Remote Coast Overnighter Kayak & Walk explore the beautiful marine reserve by kayak for one day and the Abel Tasman coastal track for 2 days and 2 nights. Abundant marine life inhabits the craggy coastline of the park and always attracts adventurous explorers. At Tonga, we are one of only three operators permitted to undertake the viewing of marine mammals from sea kayaks.

On day one, embark on a Remote Coast Tour that will take you around the marine reserve from beginning to end. We start this exciting day trip at Awaroa where the water taxi drops us off, enabling us to have a look around Shag Harbour (if the tide allows), a secret inlet unique in the Abel Tasman. Paddling south, we spend most of our time on the Tonga Island Marine Reserve & its frisky residents – the ‘kekeno’ or New Zealand fur seals. We find a beautiful beach for our picnic lunch, then continue on to see the Tonga Arches, paddling farther south exploring the carved granite coastline and passing through serene lagoons & golden sand in the “heart of the park” before reaching Bark Bay, our last destination.

Camp at Bark Bay on the first night. On day two, walk unguided back to Anchorage following the coastal track. You will have enough time exploring the track between Bark Bay and Anchorage. Leaving Bark Bay, follow the track as it ascends and winds through the dense coastal forest, then cross the 47-metre suspension bridge spanning the Falls River. Continue following the track as it meanders two valleys and descends into Torrent Bay. You have two choices leaving Torrent Bay: either walk the high tide route that will take you to Cleopatra’s Pool, or enjoy the afternoon soaking up the Anchorage scenery. You can wait for the tide to recede to cross the estuary, or time your crossing to within two hours on either side of low tide. Or you can just take the all-tide track leading around to Anchorage.

Camp at Anchorage on the second night. The morning after, on the third day, walk back to Marahau. Set aside enough time to make the most of the fantastic lookout points and wonderful beaches found on this part of the track.

We specialise in paddling so you can expect that we will provide all the necessary equipment and support from our specially designed kayak base. Our clients have access to free equipment storage, free wifi, free hot showers, and client transporters. High-quality soft and hard gear fitted for the comfort of each client are also provided.

Benefit from the knowledge and passion of a professional Abel Tasman Park guide who will accompany you for about seven hours on this trip that includes the Tonga Island Marine Reserve. We can also supply you a snack and lunch prepared on location by our container café, with your health and energy requirements in mind. All other food will have to be brought by the client.

Camping gear can either be hired through us or supplied by the client.

Each of our clients is unique, and so are our trips.

Previous experience is not required.
