Overview

Embark on a 3-day Tongariro Trekker adventure from Auckland in New Zealand that will take you through the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, the major highlight of this tour and a hike considered as one of the best day walks in the world. You will also experience the stunning Waitomo Glow Worm Caves. Taupo is famous for its thermal hot pools, and you’ll get the chance to relax in one of them. You’ll also get to visit the powerful Huka Falls and discover other marvellous natural features in the Tongariro National Park. On this tour, your accommodation, guides, luxury transport and most of your meals are included. You only have to pack your gear and your sense of adventure, and you’re all set!

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a highly recommended activity for both Kiwis and visitors as it meanders through varied landscapes that each offer a unique experience. Prepare for a trek on the slopes of Mount Ngauruhoe (also known as Mount Doom), climb volcano craters formed long ago, walk by active geothermal vents, and stop for lunch at the brightly coloured Emerald Lakes.

These are just a few highlights you can expect on this iconic hike measuring 19.4km and gaining 786m in elevation. In all, the hike takes about 6 to 7 hours to complete. Conditions could turn volatile, adding to the challenge of the hike, but most people complete the walk given adequate preparations and skilful guidance. So prepare well and you will be amply rewarded with spectacular views!

After celebrating with a round of high fives and enjoying your well-earned drink upon completing the crossing, load up for a quick drive to Taupo. On arrival, settle in to your accommodation and relax as you reflect on your achievement. Then refuel at one of Taupo’s favourite restaurants on an early group dinner. Following dinner, for those who are keen, enjoy a soak in the secluded natural hot pool of Wairakei Terraces. It’s the perfect way to cap off a fantastic hike and let your body recover from all the adventure you just had.

The itinerary detailed below leaves Auckland but we can make changes to the tour if you leave from other locations around North Island.
