Overview

This particular tour is one of our most popular packages. Enjoy the health benefits of an outdoor bicycle tour followed by relaxing activities in the evenings.  All of these aspects make for a memorable adventure.

This tour is perfect for couples, families and even groups of friends who want to get together and mark off the Otago Central Rail Trail off of their bucket list.  The tour price includes the provision of bikes, accommodation and transport. At the beginning of your tour, we will pick you up from Queenstown and, upon return, you can either go back to Queenstown or take the Taieri Gorge train to Dunedin. Our drivers are both experienced and extremely knowledgeable in terms of the local history, culture and nature of your surroundings. They will happily share this knowledge with you during each day of the trip.

A big winner with our guests is the fact that they thoroughly enjoy staying at the same accommodation every night.  Being able to relax and enjoy and the terrific country style hospitality of our staff and the Maniototo area is a big plus in travellers' books. Our drivers will also take you out to different country hotels for a scrumptious meal each evening. Many guests refer to their visit to the Naseby Indoor Curling Rink as one of the biggest highlights of their trip.

Since you have 4 whole days at your disposal, it really means that we can ride at a more relaxed pace and enjoy a number of stops along the way.  This is perfect for sightseeing and really taking in your surroundings. Since your home base is at Ranfurly, in our heritage accommodation, you will spend less time packing or unpacking and more time riding and having fun.

If you like, a side trip to the Hayes Engineering Works can be made before lunch.

Take a break and enjoy lunch at the Oturehua Tavern or the Ida Valley Kitchen. After lunch you will continue up to Rough Ridge and, at 618, this is the highest point of the Trail. From here, it's an easy ride down to Wedderburn and possibly some afternoon refreshments before the final 8kms to Ranfurly. For dinner, our driver will take you to a historic country hotel.

Day 3Ranfurly to Hyde32kms Cycling

The ride takes you across the Maniototo Plain from Ranfurly to Waipiata. This is followed by a lovely run along the Taieri River to Kokonga and Daisybank. Prices Creek brings you a 32m high Viaduct and 152m long Tunnel (in case you were wondering, this is where that torch will come in handy!). Indulge in a late lunch at the Otago Central Hotel in Hyde and enjoy its view back down the trail you've just conquered.

This is where our driver will meet you and bring you home to Ranfurly for some much needed r&r before making your way to Naseby.  If you are up for it, why not try your hand at curling in Naseby before you sit down to dinner at the Royal Hotel?

Day 4Hyde to Middlemarch27kms Cycling

Once you've had your breakfast, our driver will take you back to Hyde for you to continue where you left off. Cycle past the Hyde Railway Station.  In 1943, 21 people lost their lives in a tragic accident here. Keep your eyes open for cloud formations referred to as the Taieri Pet over the Rock and Pillar range.

Our driver will meet you at the end of the Trail in Middlemarch and take you to one of the cosy cafes for some well-deserved refreshments. If you wish to travel to Dunedin via the Taieri Gorge Railway, our driver will take you and your luggage to the 'station' at Pukerangi.
