Itinerary
Open AllWe’ll greet you in the crafty town of Hokitika and get ready at our depot with the bike/trip briefing. We will then shuttle you to the small historic mining township of Ross to start your first ride on the trail.
You will cycle through wetlands and native bush, taking in incredible views of the mighty Mt Cook and Mt Tasman before giving the bikes a rest at the Treetop Walkway. Here, you can experience the native forest, birdsong and views of Lake Mahinapua by foot from the heights of a tree canopy.
In the evening take a boat cruise up the stream to Lake Mahinapua itself, following the original route used by early explorers and gold prospectors.
Accommodation tonight is at Scenic Waterways, which is approx. 3km before Hokitika. From the boutique ensuite accommodation you will have views of the Southern Alps and the native fauna of the Mahinapua waterway that meanders through the property.
From Hokitika’s township, you will cycle along the historic Kaniere Tram Road, taking in some breathtaking views of the Hokitika River before making your way into the native forest.
You will soon find yourself at the glistening shoreline of the 195m deep Lake Kaniere, a great spot for a picnic stop. From here, the trail will take you through the rugged native bush tracks and open farmland that parallels the Arahura River through to Milltown.
Cycle the zigzag up from Milltown to the end of todays trail section at Cowboy Paradise. At the on-site saloon/café you can buy a coffee and light refreshments while soaking up the magnificent view out from the native bush over the Arahura Valley.
Today you will ride to the historic village of Kumara, made famous for New Zealand’s last big gold rush of the 19th century.
Begin the morning with breakfast in the saloon before you start cycling your way through native forest towards Kawhaka Intake. A great place to stop for a morning break is Trappers Rest. You might even have the opportunity to catch a local farmer for a chat and cup of tea.
Cycle through pristine bushland, and take in the stunning views of the creek below as you cycle across the Macpherson Swing Bridge.
The Southern Alps make another welcome appearance today so take the time to snap some photos. From here, smooth sweeping boardwalk and bush trail will take you down into Kumara.
Stay the night in Kumara.
The last ride of the trip rewards you with flawless views of the Taramakau River before making the journey to the Tasman Sea alongside coastal sand dunes and lagoons.
One last section along the Grey River will take you into Greymouth, just in time for a celebratory lunch at Monteith’s Brewery in Greymouth (optional).
Finish in Greymouth.
