South Island

Start: Christchurch
Duration: 6 days

This six-day, five-night family escape starts and finishes in Christchurch, with city sightseeing, wildlife encounters, a Māori waka experience and a full-day guided visit to the Edoras filming location. Available dates depend on tour schedules. The package includes Christchurch accommodation, six days’ SUV rental, rental insurance and selected activities. It suits families who want a flexible Canterbury holiday, subject to each activity’s age requirements.

Discover Christchurch and Canterbury together

Make Christchurch your base for five nights while exploring the city and Canterbury at your own pace. Your rental vehicle gives the family room to plan around the included attractions, with free time for local sightseeing and optional day trips. The itinerary starts and ends in Christchurch, so there is no need to change accommodation each night.

Meet New Zealand wildlife at Willowbank, explore Antarctica at the International Antarctic Centre and experience the Ōtākaro Avon River from a Māori waka. A city attractions pass brings together the heritage tram, Christchurch Gondola and punting on the Avon, while a guided Edoras tour reaches the Canterbury high country. Optional experiences around Akaroa, the Port Hills and Hanmer Springs can be arranged to suit your family’s interests.

Note: All short stay packages can be tailored to suit your travel plans, with included tours and activities exchanged for alternative experiences. Package durations can also be shortened or extended to match your dates, or combined with other short stay packages to create a longer New Zealand itinerary.

Choose the pace of your family holiday

The scheduled experiences offer a mix of wildlife, culture, city sightseeing and dramatic inland scenery. Between them, you can spend time in Christchurch’s gardens, markets and neighbourhoods or take a scenic drive towards Akaroa. Activities described as optional or alternative below require a separate arrangement or a confirmed exchange; they are not additional inclusions.

Family suitability varies by activity. The Antarctic Centre’s guided tour is restricted to guests aged 16 and over, and its Hägglunds ride has a height requirement. Families travelling with younger children should confirm a suitable Antarctic Centre substitution and the full set of booked activities before paying.
