Day 1Queenstown

Starting in Queenstown, we drive to Arrowtown where you can enjoy the warm autumn colours as the leaves on the trees that line the streets begin to change colour.  We stop in at the Chinese miners' settlement at the end of the town and gain insight into the harsh conditions that miners endured in their efforts to find gold.

We enjoy lunch at The Stables in Arrowtown before driving to Queenstown.  In the afternoon, you will have plenty of time to visit the local shops of this famous resort town and stroll around the lake front before preparing for dinner. (L,D)

Day 2Queenstown

We begin with a morning gondola ride up Bob's Peak to the Skyline.  Enjoy the expansive views of Lake Wakatipu, the Remarkables Range and everything in between.  We then drive along the lake to Glenorchy and to the historic Kinloch Lodge for a delicious lunch.  This evening, we will board the coal fired steamship, the TSS “Earnslaw” and, accompanied by a pianist playing some old favourites, we will cruise along Lake Wakatipy to Walter Peak Station.  Here we will sit down for dinner at the Colonel's Homestead.

Packing for “Fiordland Navigator”: You are limited to one overnight bag each.  Make sure that you include a waterproof jacket, walking shoes, a warm woollen sweater, a change of clothing, a pair of sunglasses, insect repellent and your camera. (B,L,D)

Day 3Queenstown – Doubtful Sound

Departing from Queenstown, we drive along the lake, through the farmlands and on to Manapouri.  Here we will board a launch to cruise on to the head of the lake.  We then travel by coach through the beech forests over the Wilmot Pass and on to Doubtful Sound where our small ship, the “Fiordland Navigator” waits for us.

We cruise the calm, sheltered waters of this stunning fiord until we reach the Tasman Sea.  The ship's nature guide will keep watch for any marine and bird life.  The local seal colony enjoy bathing in the sun on the islands at the entrance of the Sound.  In the evening, the ship will anchor in a tranquil cove and your nature guide can take you even closer to the shoreline by travelling in an inflatable craft. (B,L,D)

Day 4Doubtful Sound – Wanaka

This morning you will awake to the perfect silence and stunning views of this remote location.  Breakfast will be served as the ship cruises the inner arms of the sound and takes you safely to Deep Cove.  Here, we will disembark at 10am, retrace our steps and return over Wilmot Pass, across the lake and on to Manapouri.

At Manapouri, we will rejoin our coach and take a break for lunch at Dunrobin Farm where Ian and Aileen Grant will be our hosts.  We then head on to the tussock-covered Crown Range.  As we descend into the valley, we will stop at the historic and quaint Cardrona Hotel.  We will enjoy dinner and spend the evening here as we appreciate the hotel's history that dates back to the gold mining period. (B,L,D)
