Overview
Appreciate the French legacy on a Akaroa Farm Tour from Christchurch, which we will reach after a journey through the magnificent landscape of the Banks Peninsula in New Zealand. The area was formed over six million years ago following cataclysmic volcanic eruptions; Akaroa itself sits atop a crater from the Miocene era.
Journey to Akaroa via the high summit route over the Banks Peninsula, taking in the unfolding scenery of the Canterbury Plains, farmlands, the Akaroa Harbour, and the Southern Alps in the distance. From above, glimpse remote bays that are carved along the coastline.
Before sitting down for lunch at a renowned café, you’ll also have a chance to explore the picturesque 175-year-old French harbourside township of Akaroa. It’s the only French settlement in New Zealand, making your visit to its museum settlers’ history and shops and studios devoted to arts and crafts all the more special.
Following lunch, we make our way to Paua Bay Farm on a scenic journey over the summit road. Gain insight into life at a working sheep farm, watch a sheep shearing and a demonstration featuring a working sheep dog. Enrich your understanding with entertaining tales from the owner of the farm, Murray Johns, then cap off your visit with farm-style afternoon tea.
If time allows, we pass by Barry’s Bay enroute to Christchurch for a visit to the Cheese Factory, the last of its kind on the peninsula from a long-gone era.
Please note that the sequence of the day’s activities depend on the timing of Paua Bay Farm.
