Embark on an incredible Alps 2 Ocean & West Coast Trails Independent Cycle self-guided journey on two of the greatest New Zealand Great Rides – the West Coast Wilderness Trail, and the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail.
On your Alps 2 Ocean ride, cycle through a landscape surrounded by magnificent mountain views, breathtaking turquoise lakes, and rolling farmland before following the rugged coastlines and exploring the wilderness landscapes of the West Coast. Expect this to be an epic cycling trip and more! Listen to birdsong and breathe in New Zealand’s native forest from a treetop walkway; settle in for the night at the striking Lake Coleridge; and gain insight into historic gold mining townships and ancient Maori tales of trading routes.
We make sure that all the hard bits are taken care of, as we do for all our packaged trips. All you need to prepare for is the wonderful cycling adventure that lies ahead.
Trips run from September to April.

We will pick you up in the morning and transfer you by private vehicle to Twizel, leaving you with the afternoon to explore this rural township before spending the night.
Stay the night in Twizel
* This itinerary allows you to fly into Christchurch the morning of your trip as we can work the departure time around you.
Our morning shuttle will take you to your chosen starting point on the trail. Cycle the golden tussock and lakeside trails through the Mackenzie Country to Twizel.
Spend the night in Twizel.
Cycle the sealed canal roads from Twizel to the edge of Lake Ohau before following the dedicated lakeside cycle trail around to Lake Ohau Lodge.
Spend the night at Lake Ohau.
Cycle to the top of the Tarnbrae highpoint, overlooking Lake Ohau and the Mackenzie plains before heading downhill through the Quailburn. Take a 7km detour to the Clay Cliff rock formations if you have time, or relax in the wood fired Omarama Hot Tubs in town.
Spend the night in Omarama.
One of the most scenic days on the trail, todays ride takes you along the stunning backcountry roads of Lake Benmore and Lake Aviemore. Take in the spectacular views of the Waitaki Valley from the top of the Benmore Dam and cycle through to Kurow.
Spend the night in Kurow.
Follow the trail along the Waitaki River, passing through the vineyard just out of Kurow’s township (a great spot for a coffee stop!). After about 23km you will come to the Maori Rock art site before continuing on through the wetlands into Duntroon.
Depending on the accommodation available – spend the night in Duntroon or Rural Duntroon.
The final day on the trail will take you through sweeping farmlands, past the Elephant Rock formations and Rakis Railway Tunnel, and into the seaside town of Oamaru where the trail ends at Friendly Bay at the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy a celebratory drink at Scott’s Brewery or explore Oamaru’s unique Victorian precinct.
Spend the night in Oamaru.
We will pick you up at midday after you have explored the Victorian Centre and transfer you to Lake Coleridge, a little known hideaway in the Rakaia River where we overnight at the lodge.
Stay the night at Lake Coleridge.
This morning we drive through the spectacular Arthurs Pass before descending into the West Coast. After arriving at Hokitika, we collect our bikes and travel to Ross for a 33km cycle back to Hokitika that afternoon. En route we take in the Tree Top walk experience, overlooking Lake Mahinapua.
Stay the night in Hokitika.
Follow the trail out of Hokitika inland through small rural townships. Smooth flowing bush tracks lead to the beautiful Lake Kaniere before winding through the Arahura Valley and Milltown area where you can visit Cowboy Paradise for afternoon refreshments. However, we urge you to make a donation if you use their bathroom facilities. Our shuttle will bring you back to Hokitika for a second night.
Stay the night in Hokitika.
Take our morning shuttle from Hokitika to Milltown. Begin the day’s ride with a short climb up to Kawhaka Pass with stunning views down the coast. From here the trail descends down to Kumara and the beautifully restored Theatre Royal Hotel.
Stay the night in Kumara.
The final days ride takes will take you to the Taramakau Bridge and along the coast into Greymouth. A final celebratory drink and lunch at Monteith’s Brewery Bar before boarding the TranzAlpine Express back to Christchurch.
