Enjoy a relaxing Bay of Islands Day Tour and Russell Mini Tour to the picture perfect Bay of Islands in new Zealand and learn all about its captivating history. Visit the very birthplace of New Zealand and experience both the past and present on this sightseeing day tour of the historical Bay of Islands.
Leaving Auckland in the morning, you will travel across the Harbour Bridge and head north on one of GreatSights' comfortable and air conditioned deluxe coaches. Along the way, your driver guide will point out the various sights along the way and provide both informative and entertaining commentary as you travel through farmlands and abundant native forest areas towards the Bay of Islands.
Once you arrive, you can take time to explore the lovely seaside village of Paihia at you own leisure. Hereafter, you will enjoy a short ferry ride across the harbour to Russell, which is also known by its Maori name Kaororareka.
Russell, Bay of Islands
A Russell Mini Tour by coach awaits you on the other side and this one-hour intimate tour is lead by a professional local guide who will bring the area to life with a combination of historical knowledge and local insight. While Russell may seem peaceful today, you will learn all about the busier and arguably rowdier times during the early part of the 19th century. This once lawless open port was known as the “Hell Hole of the Pacific”.
Find out all about why Russell is so significant in terms of the country's history. Learn about Christ Church (the oldest church in New Zealand), the historic Pompallier House and the oldest licensed pub in the country! You will also find out more about the second oldest game fishing club in the world – the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club which was made famous by the American author, Zane Grey. The tour will take you to areas that are not easily accessible by foot like Flagstaff Hill (Te Maiki) where you can enjoy an amazing 360-degree view of the entire Bay of Islands.
Once your tour comes to an end, you will have some time to walk around the township before making your way back to Paihia. Here your coach driver will meet you and take you back to Auckland.
