Experience the Otago Peninsula from the most desirable vantage points on this 75-mile stunning journey before returning to the beaches and bays surrounding Dunedin.

Signal Hill Lookout & City Highlights

We begin our 60-mile scenic journey that will make up your half-day Dunedin shore excursion at Signal Hill Lookout where you can admire a landscape dotted with vents and rock domes that are now blanketed with forest and pasture.

We then take a tour of Dunedin, New Zealand’s oldest city, to admire its largest collection of celebrated historical architecture consisting of Edwardian as well as Victorian buildings, including one of the most photographed structures in New Zealand, the historic Dunedin Railway Station. We also head to Baldwin Street to experience the "world's steepest street."

Before setting off for the Peninsula, we stop at another lookout in Smails Beach for a view of curious rock formations as well as of surfers riding the southern rollers.

Otago Peninsula & Portobello

Get to know more about Dunedin’s volcanic origin on reaching the Otago Peninsula after our journey via the coastal road. We explore the remote corner of the peninsula and set off for the headlands' southern fringes.

Make the most of our regular stops along the way to take photos of the extraordinary and fascinating flora and fauna of this area. This section of the coast is postcard pretty so photographers may want to keep their camera handy.

We take the high road for you to see incredible harbour views, then we make our way down to get to the Tidal Inlets, observing early limekilns and dry stone dyke walls as we pass through.

As we travel to Otago Peninsula’s main township of Portobello, we stop at the Tidal Inlets, a place that will surely delight the birdwatchers among the group as the stunning inlets attract herons, kingfishers and several other waterfowl and waders. Everyone else will surely appreciate the history and important ecosystem present in the area as they contemplate that often it’s the unseen things that leave the greatest impact on how the ecosystem works.

Wildlife Reserve and Sandy Beaches

This is the farthest that we’ll go on our coastal adventure! The wildlife reserve promises sightings of amazing wildlife which you can already see after a brief walk. We devote 20-30 minutes scoping out for the New Zealand fur seals and New Zealand sea-lions, the latter considered the rarest in the world.

From here, marvel at one the most spectacular beaches in the Otago Peninsula. And you don’t just have to look! Take your shoes off and dig your toes into the sand. You also don’t have to go far looking for incredible basalt rock formations. There are plenty onshore and offshore, and you can get up close to them for amazing photographs.

After shaking off sand from your feet, snap one more picture along the beach. Finally, we return to Port Chalmers, taking the low road.
