Overview

Our exploration of the Chetwood Forest on Marble Mountain begins with a visit to Jens Hansen Gold and Silversmiths, the talented artisans who crafted the 'One Ring' used in The Lord of the Rings. Here, travelers will be able to view a selection of replica LOTR jewelry before disembarking in our official Mercedes van through the Upper Moutere and Riwaka en route to Marble Mountain.

Upon arrival, we will embark on a short 400-metre trek to the famous Hawkes lookout, which features breathtaking views of the Riwaka Valley, Tasman Bay and the Marlborough Sounds. Seeing how the area is laid out, you will gain understanding on why its geology inspired the making of the Hobbit trilogy.

An exploration of the Marble Mountain would not be complete without a trip into “Middle Earth”, made possible by the renowned Ngarua Caves. These subterranean caverns host an array of strange, otherworldly rock formations that conjure images of fantastic creatures and mythical beings.

After returning to the vehicle, the tour will continue past an array of wonderful natural landmarks, many of which were featured in The Lord of the Rings, particularly in the memorable scenes where Aragorn and the party of hobbits fled from the Black Riders in Bree and into the Chetwood Forest. We will then arrive at our 'Hobbit feast', featuring local produce that has helped establish Nelson as the “fruit bowl” of New Zealand. Following this leisurely meal, we will explore a nearby beech forest until we locate Harwoods Hole, the deepest vertical shaft in the entire country!

From here, travelers can choose to return to Nelson to explore a selection of other wonderful attractions in the city or continue on to Takaka as part of the 'West of Rivendell' tour.

Exclusive Helicopter Option 1:

Travelers can choose to fly from the Chetwood Forest (Marble Mountain) to the South of Rivendell (Mount Olympus) before continuing on to Motueka.

The majestic outcroppings on Mount Olympus have been slowly crafted throughout history by a variety of weather conditions. The jagged massif was used to depict the rugged terrain of South of Rivendell in The Lord Of the Rings where the Fellowship took a rest and prepared a meal. They were eventually spotted by Saruman's crebain crows who were searching for the news of the One Ring. The pinnacles served as the hiding place of the Nine as the crows scouted for them from above.

Due to the relative remoteness of this location, all tours must rely upon helicopter travel to reach these destinations located on northern part of the Kahurangi National Park. Upon arrival, travelers will be rewarded with unforgettable views of Aorere Valley and Golden Bay.

Helicopter Option 2:

Travelers can select a flight path that begins at Chetwood Forest (Marble Mountain) before continuing on to the South of Rivendell (Mount Olympus) and finally arriving at Dimrill Dale, also known as Mount Owen. In the LOTR trilogy, Mount Owen was featured prominently, particularly in the scenes where the Fellowship escaped the subterranean mines as Gandalf sacrificed himself to aid in their escape.

Mt. Owen, situated near the southern border of Kahurangi National Park near Murchison, features some of the most ancient rock formations in the entire country, including a spectacular collection of glaciated marble karst that simply must be seen to be believed! This area also features a massive underground cave network.
