Departure begins in Christchurch, often referred to as the Garden City. As the journey heads out of the city, the guide shares context around local landmarks, history and the city’s rebuild following the 2011 earthquakes. Urban scenery gradually gives way to open countryside.

The route continues across the expansive Canterbury Plains, a defining feature of the region. Patchworks of farmland, braided rivers and distant mountain ranges create wide-open views as the journey heads toward the Mackenzie Basin.

After crossing an alpine pass, the vivid blue waters of Lake Tekapo come into view. A short stop allows time to take in the lake’s colour, shaped by glacial silt, and the surrounding mountain scenery.
