The Coastal Pacific train journey brings passengers from the beautiful port of Picton, gateway to the stunning Marlborough Sounds, to Kaikoura where you can join whale watching tours, and onto the Garden City of Christchurch, the largest city in South Island. Each year, the Coastal Pacific train services this route daily from the end of September to early May.

Looking out from the comfort of your carriage, you will see the bountiful wine-growing region of Blenheim and the rocky Kaikoura mountain ranges on one side of your window, and the Pacific Ocean shoreline on the other, offering glimpses of marine wildlife like seals and penguins. You can get off at Kaikoura for a closer encounter with its marine attractions, and a sumptuous meal of crayfish and mussels picked straight from the sea. As you continue on to Christchurch, you will see some of the premium horticultural areas and farmlands of the Canterbury Plains.

Enjoy the scenery from inside the centrally heated and air conditioned carriages looking out through un-tinted, non-reflective wide-view side and roof windows, or in the open-air viewing carriage of the Coastal Pacific train, which features cutting-edge air bag suspension system, making train travel much quieter and smoother.
Listen to GPS-prompted commentary in five languages via headphones at your seat as you journey through the renowned wine-growing region and dramatic coastal and mountain scenery of South Island’s northeastern coast. Information displays are likewise available as well as overhead HD video.

You can get off at the following stops: Blenheim (where you can travel to and from Nelson via connecting bus and coach services), Seddon, Kaikoura (which you can get to on a day excursion from Christchurch), Waipara and Rangiora.

With the Coastal Pacific train, you can sit back and marvel at the fertile farmlands and rugged beauty of South Island’s north-eastern coastline, and experience an authentic Kiwi rail journey.
