Day 1Hyde to Wedderburn43 kms

Make your way to the historic Dunedin Train Station where your tour starts. From there, board the Taieri Gorge Tourist Train that takes you to Pukerangi where you will be met by our shuttle for your transfer to our depot in Middlemarch. After getting fitted with your cycles and receiving briefing of your tour, you will be transported 30 km. to Hyde. This is where you start cycling 43 kms. to Wedderburn.

Pedalling through the marvellous “Upper Taieri Gorge”, you pass through a tunnel and over 2 viaducts before spending the night at Wedderburn. A New Zealand country style dinner of “Roast and Veg” and a sampling of other local favourites await at a nearby tavern, a short walking distance from your accommodation for the night.

Day 2Wedderburn to Omakau42 kms (B)

Stop for morning coffee or tea at Oturehua as you make your way from Wedderburn to Omakau. Then wander about and discover the history behind the Hayes Engineering Workshop, and a short drive down the road and just off the trail, the remains of the Golden Progress Mine.

Leaving Oturehua, continue on to one of the most dramatic sections of the trail at Poolburn Gorge where you can ride through the two tunnels and two viaducts that train passengers of the past could have only glimpsed. You can get off your bike for a while to admire the workmanship of the stonemasons, and reflect on their lives and hardships, before cycling on to the township of Lauder for a brief lunch stop. Finally, make your way to Omakau for a pick up and transfer through to Clyde, and link with transport onwards to Queenstown.

As pick up from Omakau is at 4PM-4:30PM, you will have plenty of time to cycle this day and stop for refreshments or drinks along the way before catching the bus. You can even choose to take the 5km. round trip from Omakau to Ophir for more goldmining history.
