7:30 AM - Our journey begins by leaving the peaceful town of Franz Josef, where we set out towards Christchurch. Sit back and enjoy the view as we leave glacier country behind and head eastward.
Lake Ianthe - Our first stop is the tranquil Lake Ianthe, nestled in a glacial trough and surrounded by podocarp forests and hills. This serene lake is home to a variety of wetland birds, including one of New Zealand’s largest populations of the endangered Great Crested Grebe. Take a moment to soak in the beauty of this peaceful spot, perfect for capturing those “wow” moments.
Hokitika - Arriving in Hokitika, you’ll feel the relaxed, nostalgic atmosphere of this charming coastal town. We’ll give you time to enjoy a stroll along the wild, black-sand beach, where you can watch the rugged surf of the Tasman Sea, spot the remnants of a shipwreck, and maybe even find a piece of greenstone. This "cool little town" is full of surprises, and you’ll have time to explore its treasures.
Hokitika Village Options – You can either join pre-booked activities, explore the village at your own pace, or join our group on an unforgettable visit to Hokitika Gorge.
Hokitika Gorge (1 hr) – If you choose to visit the gorge, you’re in for a treat. Hidden away on the West Coast, this stunning gem is famous for its striking turquoise waters, framed by lush native bush. Nature lovers and photographers flock here to capture its magical, otherworldly beauty. After getting those Instagram-worthy shots, our driver will pick you up as we continue towards Arthur’s Pass.
Greymouth - We’ll make a brief stop at the Greymouth Information Centre. The largest town on the West Coast, Greymouth is surrounded by rugged cliffs, wild beaches, and the scenic Grey Valley. While it’s a picturesque destination in its own right, it also serves as the gateway for the renowned TranzAlpine train, connecting to Christchurch.
Cobden Breakwater - Another quick stop at Cobden Breakwater, where powerful waves crash against the rocky structure. This scenic spot is a photographer’s dream, with its wild beauty and dramatic backdrop.
Otira Gorge Lookout - Known as "Death’s Corner," this lookout offers breathtaking views of the national park. You’ll also see the impressive Otira Viaduct, a 440-metre-long engineering marvel that makes driving through Arthur’s Pass possible. Keep your eyes peeled for the cheeky Kea, New Zealand’s playful alpine parrot, often seen here.
Arthur’s Pass Village (1 hr) - As we travel through the Southern Alps, the scenery becomes even more dramatic. Upon arrival at Arthur’s Pass Village, you’ll have the choice to hike the Devil’s Punch Bowl Track or if you prefer to relax, you can grab a coffee, browse the local shops, and learn more about the area. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture..
- Devils Punch Bowl – This one-hour walk offers a gradual climb through lush forest, leading to a spectacular 131-metre waterfall. It’s a moderate walk suitable for most fitness levels, offering incredible views along the way.
Castle Hill - Our next stop is the fascinating Castle Hill, where ancient limestone rock formations sit proudly on the tussocky hills. These unique shapes have been sculpted over time, and the area has been featured in films like The Lord of the Rings and Narnia. It’s also a popular spot for climbers and boulderers. You’ll have time to explore this stunning landscape on your own.
Lake Lyndon - We’ll pause briefly at Lake Lyndon, a serene lake known for its thriving population of rainbow trout. Nestled within the Korowai/Torlesse Tussocklands Park, it’s a popular spot for anglers and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains.
Christchurch - We arrive in Christchurch by approximately 8:30 PM. As we approach Christchurch, you’ll notice the city’s unique blend of history, culture, and architecture. From historic landmarks to modern designs, Christchurch offers a little something for everyone. Whether you’re interested in its thriving art scene or its peaceful natural surroundings, this city is the perfect balance of vibrant city life and tranquil escape. Our guide will ensure you’re comfortably dropped at your accommodation, where you can relax and reflect on an unforgettable day across New Zealand’s South Island.
