With its Southern Alps providing a perfect backdrop for various climbing-based activities, it’s small wonder that alpine climbing is a popular activity from Wanaka in New Zealand. A long walk into “the hills” marks the start of the quintessential New Zealand mountaineering excursion for the Full Day Alpine Rock Climbing trip before arriving at sheer and towering rock faces and long sweeping ridges that require technical climbing.

Remarkables alpine routes.

The Remarkables mountain range tower above Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, dominating the skyline.

Surrounded by magnificent landscape, the Remarkables offer alpine rock climbing routes that are some of the best in the world and attract climbers from around the globe to scramble its imposing ridges and stack up their abilities against the faces of Single Cone.

In summer, we can drive up the ski field road, making the access easy and the approach short, taking only about one or two hours.

Single cone NE ridge.

Of the many alpine routes that Wanaka Rock Climbing guides, the Single Cone, whose northeast ridge towers above Lake Alta, is the easiest and shortest. Expect easy scrambling before doing fun-pitched climbing, leading to the slim yet stunning summit block.

Descent via the southern gullies is easy and takes you back to the approach trail.

Double Cone Single Cone Traverse

The distinctive ridge of the Southern Lakes district’s Big Classic is on every climber’s to-do list. The approach requires a long walk by the “shadow basin” & under the telecom tower, after which the climb begins with a long ledge systems, taking you to the top of the ridge and a vertiginous view down the sharply dropping west face.

This climb is for the most adventurous and committed climbers as the journey to the summit demands long stretches of pitched climbing on a knife-edge ridge and some white-knuckle “au cheval” manoeuvres.

The route makes its way across the peaks of the Double Cone all the way to the summit of Single Cone before going down via the southern gullies.

DB EH? Buttress

This route Is for the connoisseur climber, a direct line on the North East buttress on Double Cone requiring 5 pitches of excellent rock climbing of up to grade 17 in a fantastic location.

Approach is via a hike around Lake Alta and up to the base of the buttress.

Lake Alta Slabs

Home to many routes requiring 3-4 pitches of grades 13-16, the Lake Alta Slabs are perfect for climbers who want to spend some quiet time on the rock enjoying the pleasures of a topnotch route without getting up early and being out all day.

“When the Fat Lady sings” is a guide favourite, at grade 15. The approach requires a hike around Lake Alta and up to the base of the buttress.

Darran Mountains Alpine Rock

The Darran mountains is mecca for classic alpine rock climbing in New Zealand, and home to such routes like the “Lucky Strike”, “The Bowen Allen Corner” and “The Labyrinth”.
