Overview

On this comprehensive full day Royal Peninsula tour itinerary, discover Dunedin, New Zealand’s oldest city, and explore the rugged beauty of the Otago Peninsula. Famous for its wild shores and sandy beaches, Dunedin is as celebrated as haven to remarkable wildlife, among them the ‘critically endangered’ yellow-eyed penguin, as it is for its mix of deeply rooted Maori tribe and Scottish influences that you can admire up close on this Dunedin shore excursion. Expect to enjoy stunning views from commanding lookouts, and look forward to visit major points of interest as well as the remote corners of the Otago Peninsula famed for its rolling sand dunes, finely architected castle, and raw, breathtaking coastline.

Full Day Royal Peninsula Tour Details

The tour leaves from all centrally located accommodations or from inside Port Chalmers at 8.45AM although departure times may vary according to visiting cruise ships’ arrival or departure time, which is confirmed during the booking process.

City Highlights

Dunedin is celebrated both for the rugged appeal of its coast as well as for its clutch of historical buildings renowned for their distinctive architecture. On this tour, you get to marvel at both!

As New Zealand’s leading commercial and industrial centre during the country’s early days, Dunedin has a collection of Edwardian and Victorian structures that it was able to preserve to this day. To start our tour, we drive into the city and gaze up to these notable structures, then set off for Baldwin Street to see the ‘world’s steepest street.’ We will also visit the University of Otago, the oldest in New Zealand, and view the often photographed Historic Dunedin Railway Station. We will also take a look at Dunedin’s distinctive octagon-shaped central plaza before moving on into the more remote areas of the bay.

Otago Peninsula

We venture farther out to where the southern rollers crash into the Otago Peninsula coastline, which is alive with rare wildlife at any time of the year.

The remarkable collection of specialised gardens at Larnach Castle is next on our list. Enjoy exploring the gardens and taking in the best views of the Otago Harbour. This tour does not include lunch, but you may purchase from Larnach Castle’s “Ballroom Café” or at a later time during the tour. On the day of the tour, please inform you guide if you have special dietary needs.

Portobello & Tidal Inlets

Leaving Larnach Castle, we set off for Portobello, following the meandering gravel road that leads to the Otago Peninsula main township. We stop at the Tidal Inlets along the way to appreciate how this remarkable ecosystem sustains the waterfowl and waders that call it home. This is where you can spot New Zealand native birds browsing the rich mudflats for food, and where you can take in some of the most scenic sights on these wild shores.

Yellow-Eyed Penguin Reserve

Our adventurous journey continues on as we enjoy the afternoon seeing the treasured and extraordinary penguins and other resident wildlife inhabiting the New Zealand coasts. Navigating a succession of tunnels and hides, we encounter the yellow-eyed penguins, one of the world’s critically endangered species, from unparalleled viewing spots. Also keep an eye out for the New Zealand fur-seals, New Zealand sea-lions, as well as the little blue penguins, that regularly wade up to the beach. During the afternoon, no fewer than two species show up so have your camera ready.

Unrivalled photographic opportunities await you on this Dunedin penguin tour, which also serves as your introduction to one of the world’s rarest penguins. You first need to climb the 90 steps and walk the 600 meters to come within sighting distance of these adorable creatures, but the 90 minutes it takes for you to complete the trek will be richly rewarded.

Taiaroa Head

View the Northern Royal Albatross gliding around the Taiaroa Head, which is our final stop for the day. Your guide will share with you the fascinating story of how this remarkable bird lives mostly at sea, choosing the farthest headland of the Otago Peninsula as its breeding ground. To cap off a perfect day, keep your eyes peeled for other points of interest in the surrounding area before we return to Port Chalmers, taking the low road.
