Overview

Climb aboard a relaxing and fun-filled full day Tauranga to Rotorua Tour in my air-conditioned coach seating a comfortable 12 people. We set off with a drive past Mt. Maunganui’s fabulous beaches and local sights which I’m going to point out as we pass by.

Travelling into Te Puke, we get up close to the kiwifruit and get under its vines, taking with us amazing photos from the encounter. We continue on to Rotorua, driving for 40 minutes through farmland, radiata pine forests, and stunning native bush.

Te Puia Maori Arts and Culture Centre

We arrive in Rotorua, a Geothermal Wonderland brimming with attractions. We visit the Te Puia Maori Arts and Culture Centre for an entertaining introduction into Maori life and culture through an insightful 30-minute Maori concert and cultural performance. The show opens with a menacing Warrior challenge and closes with the spine-tingling “haka.”

I will also lead you on a guided tour of the active geysers like Puhuto (the largest in the southern hemisphere), the bubbling mud pools, the carving school, the kiwi house hosting two live kiwi birds, and the souvenir shop.

Te Puia is the perfect place to experience a ‘hangi’ lunch. Take this opportunity to sample Maori food cooked the traditional way. The hangi lunch costs $17 and needs to be pre-ordered.

Government Gardens

We also visit the Government Gardens, the 212°F boiling cauldron of ‘Rachel Pool,’ and the historic building of the Rotorua Bath House. Lunch is at The Lakeside Café on the edge of Rotorua Lake if the group hasn’t had a hangi.

Nearby Kuirau Park is a must-see, with its range of attractions like the mud and sulphur pools, the bubbling hot water lake, and the warm mineral water foot bath where you may soak tired feet.

I can also take you to see many other places that are worth the trip:

  • Hamurana Springs. Peaceful crystal clear cold spring water home to a population of swans, ducks, geese, and in summer, trout (attracted by the cold water).
  • Redwood Forest. Get up close to the mighty Californian Redwoods to truly appreciate their size and their scent.
  • Okere Falls. Commercially rafted waterfall considered the tallest in the southern hemisphere.

Though there are plenty other sites to see, our time allow us to see only a few of them. To cap off this fun-filled day, enjoy a relaxing drive back to the Port of Tauranga to meet your ship.

The following sites are flexible options:

  • Polynesian Pools for a soothing bath in the hot mineral water
  • Skyline Gondola and Luge (where you can enjoy panoramic views and ride the Luge)
  • The Buried Village (visit the History Museum, see the excavated artefacts from the Great Tarawera Eruption)
  • Rainbow Springs (view exotic national birds, trout, and the new Big Splash)
  • Kawarau Jet Experience (thrilling ½ hour ride on Lake Rotorua, short visit to Mokoia Island with informative commentary)
