Discovering the distinctive, endangered, and rare birds and plants on predator-free Ulva Island is the main goal of the Ulva Island Guided Walk tour, assisted by one of our top-notch local guides. Departing from Golden Bay Wharf on New Zealand's Stewart Island, this half day guided guided walk starts and finishes with a short water taxi trip to Ulva Island.
Trails of well-maintained gravel wind through native podocarp forest, replete with the chirping of birds. Beautiful orchids in bloom, and a flock of friendly birds that might get too close for your camera.
South Island Saddleback, Stewart Island Weka, NZ Pigeon/Kereru, South Island Kaka, Yellow- and Red-crowned Parakeet (Kakariki), Morepork, Rifleman, New Zealand Fantail, South Island Tomtit, Stewart Island Robin, Yellowhead (Mohoua), Brown Creeper, Grey Warbler, New Zealand Bellbird, and Tui are likely to be seen during the Ulva Island Guided Walk.
The Ulva Island forest is made up of magnificent rimu, southern rata, kamahi, totara, and miro trees, as well as ferns and a living fossil called tmesipteris.
There will be plenty of photo stops along the way, and you are welcome to bring snacks and a drink to sip while we walk.
Typically, groups consist of three to six individuals, but this may not always be possible. Please contact us if group tours are not your thing; we can usually work something out, and we don't bite! We try to accommodate everyone's needs within a group, but if you have specific requirements, a private tour offers greater flexibility. Possibly a particular bird or plant species for your list or photographic archive. You had surgery recently, correct? Perhaps you or your child have special requirements. Please let us know; if we know in advance, we can help you enjoy your experience.
By selecting Ulva's Guided Walks, you help us support Gadget, the only rodent-detection dog in the southern region of New Zealand. Detector Gadget is a part of the Conservation Dogs Program and aids in keeping Ulva Island free of invasive pests and predators. Discover what Detector Gadget has been doing recently!
Additionally, your donations enable us to continue supporting the Ulva Island Charitable Trust and the Department of Conservation in their efforts to further restore Ulva Island and keep it free of invasive pests and predators so that native plants and birds can thrive.
