Operating 364 days of the year regardless of the weather, tours from the Shires Rest begin at 9AM, with tours every 30 minutes, with the last tour at 5PM.
A typical day in Hobbiton:
From Auckland, the trip to Hobbiton takes about 2.5 hours either direction and takes you through the hilly landscape of the Waikato region and idyllic farming towns along the way. From the bustling Matamata township, the Shires Rest is only 10 minutes away, sitting amongst the hills on a private working farm.
On arrival, as your driver and guide gets the tickets and info packets (available in various languages), you may want to browse the on-site gift shop or fuel up with breakfast or lunch at the Shires Rest before the tour starts.
When it’s time for your tour to start, hop on a bus that will take you and fellow hobbit fans down into the valley where the Hobbiton movie set has been brought back to life in exquisite detail.
A local Hobbiton guide will take you through the movie set on a two hour guided tour. Explore gardens, bridges and the many Hobbit holes before taking a break at the Green Dragon Inn for a local ale and their highly recommended pie. Prepare to be wide-eyed as you come up close and personal to the real thing usually only viewed on the big screen.
