Upgraded Experience at the Hobbiton Movie Set:
Starting 1 December 2023, every tour at Hobbiton Movie Set will feature a special experience inside a Hobbit Hole™, meticulously created by the same talented teams that worked on The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films. Situated in Bagshot Row™, these Hobbit Holes provide a genuine look into the quaint homes of Hobbits as they go about their everyday life in the Shire™.
As you explore, duck your head while navigating the labyrinth of rooms and corridors, all built to accommodate a Hobbit's size. Marvel at the walls, adorned with intricate hand-painted details and carvings, a testament to meticulous craftsmanship. The interiors are further enhanced with vibrant, hand-sewn linens and various ornamental touches.
Discover traces of the Hobbits' ancestral history, with family heirlooms and keepsakes from past generations scattered around. Peek into a pantry brimming with supplies for their seven daily meals, and experience the warmth of a lively hearth, offering a glimpse into the unique lifestyle of these charming beings.

The Hobbiton Movie Set Tour is an essential stop on the itinerary of all visitors to New Zealand that are travelling between Auckland and Rotorua, where you can experience the real Middle Earth. This tour offers an interesting and entertaining experience including the famous Hobbiton film set used by Peter Jackson in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. Your tour commences with a picturesque drive through a 1,250 acre working sheep farm, with 13,000 sheep and 300 beef cattle, and spectacular views of the Kaimai Ranges.
On arrival your tour guide will escort you through the 10 acre site, with fascinating stories of how the Hobbiton Movie Set was created. The Hobbit holes, Green Dragon Inn, Mill and other structures created for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films can be viewed and you will see how this beautiful piece of Waikato farmland was transformed into The Shire from Middle-earth.
Upon completion of your tour of the set you will return to The Shires Rest, with time to bottle feed the pet lambs and visit the Shire Store.

The tour spends about 1½ hours walking with stops. Total distance walked is about 1½ kms.
Wheel Chair Access at Hobbiton
There is a portion of the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour that is not wheelchair accessible. If you book at least 2 weeks in advance, we can offer you a complementary golf cart to take you around the set, so you can see everything.
Tour Reminders
Please arrive at The Shire's Rest ticketing centre or Matamata i-SITE at least 20 minutes prior to your tour's scheduled departure. Remember, this is a guided walking tour, so wearing comfortable shoes is advisable.
Make sure your booking covers tickets for every member of your party, including children aged 0-10 years. It's essential that all guests have their tickets arranged before arrival to enable us to accommodate your group effectively.
