Overview
Set off from Auckland, New Zealand for a one-day Hobbiton & Rotorua Small Group Tour including Wai-o-Tapu around the awe-inspiring Hobbiton Movie Set made famous by the Lord of the Rings films, and of Rotorua’s renowned geothermal gems including one of the most otherworldly places on earth, the Wai-o-Tapu geothermal park.
We will collect you from your hotel in our comfortable mini-bus seating 12 people, and take you on a scenic drive through the most extensively farmed area in the world, the serenely beautiful Waikato countryside, on your fully guided journey to Hobbiton. As you make your way south, marvel at the scenery as it unfolds, capture wonderful photo opportunities, take in stunning mountain views, and see an assortment of farm animals on your journey.
The drive eventually leads you to the Alexander family sheep farm where the Shire’s Rest, the entrance to the Hobbiton movie set, is also located. As we collect your tickets to the movie set, marvel at the sight of thousands of sheep, cool down with an ice cream, be energised with a cup of coffee or a bite to eat.
Get on the big green Hobbiton bus that will take you to the set for a two-hour fully guided tour of this incredible 12-acre site. A professional Hobbiton guide will be on hand to show you around so you make the most of your visit. Admire the 44 wonderfully crafted Hobbit holes, set foot on the Shire’s lush pastures, visit the well-tended gardens, and learn about the amazing stories and secrets behind the making of the movies before capping off your experience with a well-deserved cold beverage at the iconic Hobbiton pub, the Green Dragon Inn.
With a guide leading the way, make your way back through the sheep farm of the Alexander family after your Lord of the Rings experience. You then travel south to visit Rotorua’s active geothermal area, passing through the intriguing town of Tirau (the self-billed world capital of corrugated iron sculpture) and the scenic Fitzgerald Glade. A string of attractions awaits you on your drive to Rotorua. On arrival, you will be taken on a guided city tour to see up close its most popular and historical sites such as the Government Gardens, the thermal springs, the Blues Bath, the Polynesian Spa, and its namesake lake, Lake Rotorua.
Following lunch, continue your adventure to one of the world’s most surreal places, the Wai-o-Tapu Geothermal Park, where an otherworldly wonderland awaits. Marvel at the creatively named attractions like the Devil’s bath, the Champagne Lake, and other fascinating geothermal features including bubbling mud pools and geothermal craters.
Finally, make your way back to Auckland on a fully guided trip to conclude your tour.
