Hobbiton Tour and Waitomo Caves Experience

Leaving Auckland in the morning, travel by luxurious GreatSights coach through the abundant Waikato and King Country regions. Your trained and experienced local driver / guide will keep you informed and entertained by pointing out several points of interest along the way, before arriving at Matamata and the location of the Hobbiton Movie Set. 

The film set is just outside the township, a stunning 1,250-acre farm which was transformed into the charming home of the Hobbits in the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings movie trilogies. The home of Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Bilbo has been preserved after filming.

You will be given some inside information about the movie production during your guided Hobbiton tour. You will see several structures like the the Green Dragon Inn and the Mill*. Learn how this farmland was transformed into one of Middle-earth's most-loved locations. A scrumptious lunch will be served afterwards at the Green Dragon Inn. 

After the movie set tour, you will travel on to Waitomo, where you will join a 45-minute guided tour of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. To perfectly cap the tour, a boat tour will take you through the Glowworm Grotto that is lit up by thousands of glowworms. afterwards travel back to Auckland.

Handy Tip

Pick-up and drop-off service from inner city hotels is complimentary. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended and bring a warm jacket for the Waitomo Glowworm Caves guided tour.

*Major Upgrades at the Hobbiton Movie Set: Between April and December 2023, Hobbiton will undergo significant development, impacting some tour paths. During these months, tours will take an alternative route, bypassing Bagshot Row, including the iconic Samwise Gamgee’s home. Visitors should anticipate some construction noise and machinery sightings, as we work on enhancing our magical hillside.
