Overview
Leave Auckland for a one-day Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour in New Zealand to the enchanted Hobbiton Movie Set made famous by the Lord of the Rings films, and to the magical Waitomo Glowworm Caves.
We will pick you up in our cosy 12-seater mini-bus and drive you through the beautiful Waikato countryside (renowned as the world’s most extensive farming area) on a fully guided tour of Hobbiton. On your journey south, enjoy the unfolding scenery, encounter a range of farm animals, capture fantastic photos, and take in marvellous mountain views.
On arriving at the Alexander family sheep farm (where you can see thousands of sheep) and Shire’s Rest (which is the entrance to the Hobbiton set), take some time to grab a bite, have some coffee, or cool down with ice cream while we pick up your tickets to the movie set.
A big green Hobbiton bus will transport you to the set for a two-hour fully guided tour, with a professional Hobbiton guide showing you around this incredible 12-acre filming location. During your time there, set foot into the Shire’s lush pastures, see 44 Hobbit holes, admire the well-tended gardens, learn about the stories behind the making of the movies, and round out your tour with a cold drink at the iconic Green Dragon Inn.
Energised by your Lord of the Rings experience, head west to continue your guided journey to the fascinating Waitomo region where you’ll encounter hydro dams, rich farmland, race horses, and New Zealand’s Kiwiana capital.
A tour of the caves follows next but not without a stop first at the Waitomo homestead for delicious lunch and a wonderful surprise that you will find out once there.
On reaching Waitomo, descend into a cave system millions of years in the making. There you will encounter an assortment of fantastic cave formations as well as lime columns, stalactites and stalagmites. Exploring deeper underground, board a boat that will take you on your glowworm cruise on the grotto river with the mesmerising light of thousands of glowworms illuminating your path. These glowworms are found only in New Zealand, and have been a major visitor attraction for more than 120 years.
The guided journey back to Auckland will take you through the longest river in New Zealand, the Huntly power station, and the burial site for Maori Queens.
