Overview

Kepler Track Guided Great Walk

Opened in 1988, the Kepler Track Guided Great Walk in New Zealand provides an experience to hikers that is unique from one day to the next given the wide range of features that Fiordland has to offer. Windswept mountain ridges provide a stunning contrast to serene lakesides, cascading waterfalls, delicate wetlands, and limestone formations. There will also be ample opportunities for our Bushman to introduce you up close to some of the country’s most fascinating flora and fauna. Step inside the Luxmore Caves to marvel at stalactites and stalagmites then continue on to the horsetail-shaped Iris Burn Falls for a refreshing swim. Along the way, you’ll be mesmerised by the wide open views of the Te Anau Basin and the peaks surrounding it. Named after Johannes Kepler, a 17th century German astronomer, Kepler Track is one of the special places in the world where the stars are truly celestial.

Stroll past Lake Te Anau and through native forest before ascending steadily to the first hut. From here you will be hiking along the tops of the mountain range for a day buoyed by sensational and round-the-compass views over the surrounding peaks and valleys. A range of scenery – low saddle, a gorge and Lake Manapouri – greets you on the last day. Your Bushman is there to help you discover New Zealand’s extraordinary bird life like bellbirds, kaka, fantails, ruru (NZ’s native owl), and the iconic kea, the only alpine parrot in the world.

Fitness: Ideal for families anyone with reasonable fitness. Gradual climb to the first hut on day one, the second day follows the mountain ridge with magnificent views, before slowly descending on the following days.

Pick Ups: From the local iSites (Information or Visitor Centres)

Duration: About 3 days

Q&A:

Are there any side trips here?

Of our Great Walks, the Kepler Track has some of the most side trips, including two major ones: the Luxmore Caves where an underwater river and cave systems awaits, and the Iris Burn Waterfall where a swimming spot invites a refreshing dip after a vigorous day’s walk.

What kind of weather should I expect?

Rain predominates the Fiordland ranges for most of the year, for almost 11 months in fact. It can be muggy and sticky after a rain in the warmer seasons so you need to pack quick drying clothes. Day 2 sees you hiking through unprotected landscape, needing you to pack some extra gear. But with an exposed viewing platform, you will have a chance to witness the fog rolling in.

What makes this track unique compared to others?

Unlike the other Great Walks that have historical precedent such as trails linking national parks or Maori traditional routes for collecting greenstone, Kepler Track was intentionally designed to showcase the best of New Zealand. It was created with locals and visitors in mind who will be truly amazed at the variety of scenery it offers, the most in all of New Zealand.
