Mamaku Point Conservation Reserve is a world-class ecological sanctuary protecting more than 120 native species. Surrounded by native forest, sandy shoreline and coastal habitats, the reserve provides an ideal environment for kiwi and other native wildlife.
Along the way, you may hear the haunting call of Morepork, spot Little Blue Penguins returning ashore or simply pause to admire Stewart Island's extraordinary night sky. Since 2019, Stewart Island has held Dark Sky Sanctuary status, making it one of the best places in New Zealand to experience the stars away from city lights.
Your visit also contributes directly to local conservation efforts, with a portion of every booking supporting the ongoing work of the Mamaku Point Conservation Trust.

This experience requires:
- Ability to walk unassisted in the dark for up to 2 hours
- Good balance and agility
- Confidence on uneven terrain
- Ability to navigate sandy beaches and muddy tracks
- Suitable fitness for moderate walking conditions
This tour is not suitable for:
- Children under 12 years
- Guests with mobility limitations
- Guests with significant visual or hearing impairments
