Larnach Castle & Garden Entry: A Self-Guided Dunedin Experience

Larnach Castle & Garden Entry gives you full access to New Zealand’s only castle, perched on the Otago Peninsula with views that stretch across the harbour and city. Wander through the elegant rooms, historic stables, and climb the tower for panoramic 360-degree vistas. With a detailed multilingual brochure in hand, you’re free to explore the castle’s 19th-century story at your own pace.

Built in 1871, the castle showcases gothic revival architecture and a fascinating insight into the life of William Larnach and his family. Learn how this grand home fell into disrepair and was later lovingly restored by the Barker family. Every corner of the Castle offers a glimpse into the past, blending heritage with modern-day storytelling.

Discover Award-Winning Gardens and Breathtaking Views

Beyond the Castle walls, the grounds reveal an extraordinary Garden of International Significance filled with themed spaces and hidden surprises. Stroll through the South Seas Garden, the Serpentine Walk, or the enchanting Alice Lawn—all beautifully designed and maintained year-round. Whether you’re a keen gardener or casual explorer, these gardens offer something special in every season.

Take in the dramatic views from the garden’s many lookout points or ascend the Historic Tower for a truly memorable outlook over Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula.
