Enjoy an undemanding (and generally downwind) ride across the Wellington harbour and around the coast – a New Zealand cycling trip suitable for riders of all levels. Your Lighthouses and Lakes Remutaka Cycle Trail option includes: setting off at your own pace from the East by West Ferry (faster riders can complete this trip in three hours), or waiting for us to pick you up at 9AM from your Wellington doorstep for a ride down to the East by West Ferry in our shuttle van.
You then cross Wellington harbour to get to our base in Days Bay where you hop on your bike for a ride around Eastbourne to discover its many bays and cafés. Gradually, Eastbourne’s small town comforts give way to the stunning landscape of Pencarrow Head where the first lighthouse in New Zealand and lakes Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera are found.
Considering their proximity to Wellington, the lakes are the last of New Zealand’s relatively unmodified wetland system. Continue ahead in the direction of Baring Head where you can view the remains of World War II bunkers and the stunning Kaikoura Ranges in the distance. Don’t skip the fur seal colony at Turakirae Head, home to Wellington’s largest, before joining the shuttle at Orongorongo.
