Overview

On this fully supported 3-Day Lighthouses and Lakes to Rivers and Rail Trails trip in New Zealand, we substitute the suitably named Wild Coast Trail, the final and most difficult leg of the Remutaka Cycle Trail, for a friendlier but equally appealing coastal route to let you enjoy less demanding rides and take you out of shared roads. Spend 3 days of adventure cycling on easy to moderate trail, and two nights of relaxing. All you need to do is show up in Wellington and we’ll set up the rest.

  • The Best Bikes for the trail - We take a rugged mountain bike, then make it comfortable with gel seats and adjustable geometry.
  • All the "Extras" - Helmet, night-riding lights, bike lock, repair kit and instructions, carrier racks and trunk bag.
  • All Accommodation - Stay with fantastic hosts at our favourite Bed and Breakfasts (or baches for larger groups).
  • All Food - Breakfast, lunch and dinner provided (some assembly/cooking required), plus snacks and water for while you’re out on the trail.
  • All Transport - Ferry pass or shuttle to and from Wellington CBD, shuttles from Orongorongo to Days Bay (if required).
  • Safety Support - GPS tracker and locator beacon supplied so you can call in the cavalry, with shuttle support and first-aid-trained drivers for anything less serious.
  • Information and Daily Briefing - All maps and other info, plus an evening phone call to check in on the group and provide weather forecasts and briefing for the next day.

Day 1Lighthouses and Lakes (Days Bay to Orongorongo)Distance 25km+, riding time 3-6 hours, total duration 7.5 hours

Start your adventure with a scenic cruise across Wellington Harbour to our base in Days Bay, where we'll have your bikes ready and waiting, and will give you a quick briefing on what to expect for the day.

From Days Bay you'll head south through the sleepy seaside town of Eastbourne, checking out its many bays and cafes. The real adventure starts at Burdan's Gate - check out the Wahine Disaster memorial, then head out along the coast to Pencarrow Head - home to lakes Kohangapiripiri and Kohangatera (NZ's last relatively unmodified wetland system) and NZ's first lighthouse.

Carry on to Baring Head with World War 2 bunkers and amazing views of the Kaikoura Ranges, then visit Wellington's largest fur seal colony at Turakirae Head before meeting the 4.30pm shuttle at Orongorongo and back to Days Bay for the night, where your luggage and a cold drink will be waiting at one of our favourite local Bed and Breakfasts.

Note this coastal trail is quite exposed to wind - if there's a strong southerly blowing, we may choose to do this trip in reverse to save your legs!

Day 2The Hutt River Trail

Grab some breakfast at your BnB or a local cafe, then jump on your bikes and follow a meandering road around the Eastern Bays, on to Petone and the start of the Hutt River Trail.

Ride the meandering riverside trail through the Hutt Valley and on to Maymorn, where your luggage will be waiting for you in a relaxed country environment. We'll check in with you regarding your experience so far and next day's plan, then you can settle in for the night listening to the sounds of native birdlife (or a movie on your own secret cinema!).

Day 3The Rimutaka Rail Trail

Enjoy a lazy breakfast, then saddle up for a ride through the Pakuratahi Forest and on to the Rimutaka Rail Trail. You'll follow an historic rail line up a gentle incline, passing through tunnels (headlights provided!) and over bridges, while checking out information boards detailing the enormous task of constructing the old fell railway system.

Reach the summit - a large grassy plateau perfect for a picnic lunch or cold drink - then enjoy a fun (but easily controllable!) descent to Cross Creek in the Wairarapa, surrounded by some of NZ's most scenic farmland.

Continue your journey northward to Featherston, from where we'll pick you up at 2pm and shuttle you back to Wellington.
