Kupe’s Legacy in the Hokianga

Kupe’s story is brought to life through a 90-minute cultural experience in the Hokianga, a place closely connected with his arrival in Aotearoa. A traditional pōwhiri opens the visit, followed by storytelling, waiata and karakia shared by Kupe’s descendants.

Live performance, visual interpretation and personal guidance provide insight into Māori history, identity and the spiritual connection between people and whenua. The experience is respectful, moving and grounded in the knowledge of the local community.

Gallery, Theatre and 4D Film

Taonga, artworks and interactive displays share different parts of Kupe’s voyage and legacy. Digital stations allow visitors to engage with the stories at their own pace, while a 20-minute 4D film combines sound, imagery and sensory effects.

The outdoor concourse provides a quieter space to take in the surrounding Hokianga landscape. Developed with guidance from local kaumātua, Manea Footprints of Kupe reflects the strength, pride and continuity of Māori culture.
