Overview

A Milford Sound Day Trip from Queenstown is a perfect introduction to experience one of the most iconic sights of New Zealand. The road to Milford is as memorable as the destination itself, with abundant opportunity to take photos at stops chosen by your driver. Take advantage of free pick up from selected hotels, and enjoy utmost comfort at reasonable rates.

Your Milford Sound Day Trip Journey

Driving along the shorelines of Lake Wakatipu, take in the spectacular scenery with The Remarkables creating a stunning backdrop. Journey to Te Anau through the farmlands of Northern Southland, and discover a quaint town located on the shores of Lake Te Anau, the country’s second largest. You will have a chance to buy food and drinks in one of the comfort stops along the way.

Leave Te Anau and continue on the Milford Road, driving through the gates of the Fiordland National Park. The gates signal the start of one of the world’s most spectacular drives through a mesmerizing landscape dotted by tranquil lakes, imposing mountains, crystal clear rivers, and lush rainforest. Soak up the views and listen to your driver as he relates the history of the region and points out the sights. There are plenty of photo stops along the way, so get your camera ready.

Your Milford Sound Cruise

Bring warm outdoor clothes and waterproof jacket if you want to experience the Sound up close! Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most popular tourist destinations, but you can experience it all to yourselves on an “off peak” nature cruise.

Board a custom-built vessel, and get those perfect shots from spacious decks while enjoying wide open views of soaring peaks and rushing sounds of majestic waterfalls that the Sound is known for. Otherwise, there’s a comfortable luxury lounge inside where you can enjoy the views over complimentary coffee and tea.
Enjoy the benefit of having a knowledgeable guide pointing out some of the highlights of the Sound, such as the snow-capped Mount Pembroke, the hanging valley of Sinbad Gully, the Bowen Falls descending from a height of 160 m. flowing seaward, and the iconic Mitre Peak rising 1692m. above the ocean floor.

With smaller launches (about 20m.), the cruise boats let you lean in closer to the action, as they are able to navigate waters closer to the shore. These boats are specifically made for Milford waters and make fantastic viewing platforms in the event of a wildlife encounter with local fur seal population (which were once on the verge of extinction), the rare Fiordland crested penguins, or pods of playful dolphins.

Even with the Fiordland National Park and Milford Sound getting more rainfall than any other part of New Zealand, the scenery remains breathtaking under various weather conditions. If you wish to have lunch inside the comfort of the vessel, the main lounge is set up with tables and chairs, and offers front-row views of the scenery as you cruise. You can pre-order lunch to enjoy on the boat, or you can bring your own and take advantage of the complimentary tea and coffee. A small selection of refreshments is available for purchase if you want to have some snacks before going back outside.

For non-native English speakers, there are information sheets available in various languages. You can also refer to a map of Milford Sound to help you pick out its iconic landmarks such as the Pembroke Glacier, the Mitre Peak, and several waterfalls.
