Overview

One of the most exhilarating walks in New Zealand and most sought after walks in the world, the Milford Track Guided Great Walk showcases the country’s sensational alpine landscapes, wide open valley views, and hundreds of plunging waterfalls. Let your Bushman guide you through primeval and enchanting rainforest, valleys carved by glaciers that have long vanished, and crystalline alpine lakes while taking in all the serenity this backcountry has to offer. Along the way you’ll encounter New Zealand’s highest waterfall, the 580-metre Sutherland Falls.

Following the scenic ship cruise, while on the track, you will cross suspension bridges, arrive at a stunning mountain pass, and walk through native beech forest. You’ll find welcoming backcountry huts along the way. On Day 1 and Day 2, the track gradually ascends, preparing you for the steep climb to the top of Mackinnon Pass on Day 3 (regarded as one of Southern hemisphere’s most breathtaking views). Soak up the views of the Milford Sound and the surrounding valleys greeting you on your way down.

Fitness: Ideal for families and anyone with reasonable fitness. Weather in Fiordland can be wet, so good water proofing and quick drying clothes are essential.

Pick Ups: From the local iSites (Information or Visitor Centres)

Duration: About 4 days

Q&A:

Can families hike the Milford Track?

Yes. Every year, the crowds that flock to Milford Track include many families, owing to well-maintained tracks and rolling hills. As the Sounds get 11 months of rain a year, packing waterproof gear for your children and being prepared for any weather are essential.

What kind of weather can I expect?

In the summer, the southern region is typically muggy, humid and hot. The air retains high levels of moisture so wearing quick-drying clothing is highly advised. Heavy rains are to be expected. But the rains are what make Milford the paradise that it is as waterfalls tumble within hours over rolling cliffs. You also need to be prepared for days and nights to turn freezing, which is not uncommon in this part of New Zealand.

How busy is the track?

The Department of Conservation regulates the number of people on the Milford Track, so between October and April, only 40 people per day are allowed to head out on the track. To minimise the impact to the environment and reduce congestion, everyone on the track must walk in the same direction, which means you will likely pass other people along the way. The hut can be a beehive of activity during this season, providing good reason to meet locals and discover twilight creatures.
