From Deepwater Basin where your Milford Track Guided Walk from Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand starts; take a boat ride to Sandfly Point where you set out on a leisurely walk (5.5 km or 11 km return) on a well-maintained track beside the rushing waters of Arthur River and moody Lake Ada on your way to the aptly named Giant Gate Waterfall.
The track is part of a World Heritage Area best experienced on foot – birdsong echoes throughout the forest, soaring ancient canopy trees shade the track while abundant emerald green ferns surround it. On reaching the waterfall, enjoy the view from the huge swing bridge crossing the river.
Going back, we walk the track at a relaxed pace, soaking up the atmosphere of this extraordinary forest. There are only 12 walkers in the group that 1 Trips and Tramps guide has to look after, so there is plenty of opportunity to better understand the rich human heritage of the track. At the end of the walk, have your photo taken at the sign indicating the end of the track before re-joining the boat for the trip back to Milford.
